WK 5: Music Makes Me Lose Control
The Color Purple
BOSTON, MA Saturday Aug.6.2005 /FantasyMusicLeague.com/ -- The FML Insider will help you 'Breakaway': Learn who is making heat in the kitchen, find out what Pon De Replay means, discover why 50 Cent digs the color purple, and why this week's secret to win is vaulted.
One of Hip Hop's reigning divas, Missy Elliott is making some delicious sounds on her sixth album, The Cookbook. This Supa Dupa Fly Lady saw an increase of 169 percent in revenue juice this week as her first single Lose Control rockets up the eTracks. The single features melodies from Ciara and Fat Man Scoop, and has a kickin' rhythm to get your heart pumping. (It's our new favorite song.)
The first American Idol, Kelly Clarkson is proving to be a one-woman 'eTrack queen.' Her second album, 'Breakaway,' has more hit singles than we can count, and the album is the fifth best-selling album of the year, according to world charts. Clarkson continues to make serious change for the FML and shows no sign of stopping. What ever happened to Jusin Gaurini?
The Color Purple
This summer season, 50 Cent still remains the most widely held artist on the FML even though he hasn't been making half the green of Mariah Carey. This all will change next season when Fidy's makes his movie debut in the semi-autobiographical, "Get Rich or Die Tryin." Meanwhile superstar music producer Quincy Jones is composing the score for the film. This is the first film score Jones has composed since 1985's "The Color Purple."
As you know we have eight weeks to go before the prizes are passed out at the end of the season. This is the week that will make or break many labels because based on your choices will determine if your artists will get Platinum or Diamond bonuses. The gap between Digital Roasters and the rest of the Open League is widening -- so choose wisely, if you want to win.
The Caribbean Cinderella
After calling Rihanna's song, Pon De Replay, the tune of the summer and hot debuting FML artist, we realized we didn't know the meaning of Pon De Replay. So we put a call out to our readers and this is what we learned.
My name is Andre; I'm from Barbados, and proud of Rihanna's success with her new single and as an artist. Now you asked for the meaning of Pon De Replay. First of all it is an island slang we Bajans (Barbadians), Jamaicans, and other Caribbean people use it to mean to play the song again. "Pon" means "on", so the phrase is translated as "On The Replay."
66th Most Popular Boys Name
Owen is the 66th most popular boy's name from last year. And what does that have to do with the FML. Stay with me here... Congratulate, 22 year-old singer/songwriter Michelle Branch and her husband, who this week, welcomed their first child, a baby girl named Owen. Everyone is doing fine, except that Branch also happens to be this week's most dropped artist on the FML.
